Touchstone Texts
Grades K-5 Reading Like Writers
Teaching your students to read like writers
by using touchstone texts empowers them to imagine new possibilities
for their own writing. Touchstone texts are books you know well
and study closely for the purpose of learning how they are written.
By reading like writers, we are in effect inviting the authors
into our classrooms. We are saying, "We love your work and we
want to know your secrets for writing well." Although the authors
may not be speaking to us directly, what they know is all in the
pages of their books, if we just learn how to look.
