Getting Started: The First Few Weeks
of Writing Workshop

We will look at lessons that establish the roles, routines, and procedures that are essential to your writing workshop.
We will also look at lessons and structures that build community, support independence, and encourage risk taking.
Literature Leads the Way: Must Have Read Alouds for the Beginning of the Year

During this workshop we will look at books and authors who will inspire conversations around how writers work and help students envision the kinds of writers they want to be.
Writing Goals and Expectations that Drive Instruction

This workshop will address the skills, strategies, behaviors, and understandings that we want all writers to develop: Purpose and Genre, Craft, Writing Process, Writing Identity, and Conventions. We will also discuss what mechanics and convention mini-lessons look like in the writing workshop.
Units of Study in the Writing Workshop

All units of study need to have purpose and power. We will use our goals and expectations as a guide for curriculum planning and as a foundation for our teaching .
Literature Leads the Way: Using Touchstone Texts/Immersion

Reading like writers is a way we model the ways writers think, respond, and connect to books and authors. We will look at how we choose the books and authors who will serve as models and mentors in our classrooms.
Launching Unit of Study

During this session we will highlight the writing process as a way to support students seeing themselves as writers who draw upon different writing strategies for different purposes.
