Author Study of Study Grades K–1, 2–3, and 4–5
Author studies engage students in a deep understanding of an author’s writing process and craft. They help students learn how to read like writers and use mentor texts to improve the quality of their writing. Author studies are core genre studies that raise the level of students’ writing and help them envision new writing possibilities.
In this workshop:
- Learn how to organize a unit of study around a collection of mentor texts;
- Learn to use mentor texts to teach important craft techniques and improve the quality of students' writing;
- Learn how to take students through an author study, from immersion to publication; and
- Examine ways of assessing students’ work.

Revision Unit of Study Grades 6–8
Revision is often the part of the writing process that students
dislike most, so engaging them in this vital step can be quite challenging. The use of mentor texts helps give students a better understanding of the importance of revision and how authors incorporate it into their own processes and craft to improve the quality of their writing. It is through this understanding that students will be encouraged to engage in the process and envision new possibilities for crafting and improving their own writing.
This workshop will include:
- Learning when and how to incorporate revision into the school year;
- Learning how to reimagine revision and present the process to students in a new light;
- Learning how to use mentor texts to inspire students to envision new possibilities for their own writing; and
- Learning how best to encourage students to rethink their work through tried crafting techniques.
