Keynote Speakers:
Cris Crissman, PhD


Cris is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Curriculum and Instruction Department at North Carolina State University where she teaches graduate courses in Reading in the Content Areas and Teaching Literature with Young Adults. Cris is also a Special Projects Consultant with Distance Learning at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Ruie Jane Pritchard, PhD

Ruie is currently Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at North Carolina State University with emphasis in English Education. She also serves as Director of the Capital Area Writing Project (CAWP) and has numerous publications on writing instruction including chapters in Research on Teaching Writing, 2006, and in Best Practices in Literacy Instruction, 2007.

Using Literature in Writing Workshop Grades K–1 & 2–5

This workshop will focus on how to utilize books during Writing Workshop. Discuss units of study in the K-5 classroom, including genre, author, and writer's craft studies. Discuss criteria for choosing literature and ways to use books across the writing process.

RORY COHEN
Rory taught in New York City Public Schools and in Long Island before becoming a staff developer at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University. While at the project, Rory mentored elementary teachers across the state, providing demonstration teaching and reading and writing curriculum planning. Rory is now a nationally recognized literacy consultant who specializes in primary reading and writing and an Educational Co-Director at Schoolwide, Inc.
 
 
DR. LINDA BAUSCH
Linda is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Education's Graduate Literacy Department, Dowling College, Oakdale, N.Y. She has been the director of the East End Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, and is also a staff developer and literacy consultant working with teachers across Long Island, N.Y. Linda was a classroom teacher and literacy specialist before becoming a professor.
 
 
ROBIN COHEN
Robin is presently a literacy consultant in several school districts in the Northeast. She was formerly a reading specialist and staff developer in District 11 in the Bronx and at Liberty Elementary School (Nyack School district in Rockland County, NY). Robin was the 2005-2006 winner of the International Reading Association Exemplary Reading Award for New York State. She was the NY State Reading Teacher of the Year in 2002, and honored as an NCTE Educator of Excellence in 2001. Robin is also the originator of the Student-Run Bookstore project published in the American Educator and Parade magazines.
