Writing with Power & Purpose / Test-Prep with Real Books

Featured Workshops:
Writing With Power & Purpose Grades K–1, 2–3 and 4–5
Persuasive Essay Grades 6–8

This workshop will focus on real-world writing—practical or persuasive in purpose and intended for a specific audience. This is an excellent genre for students to immerse themselves in as they are already involved with and surrounded by real-world writing at home, at school, and everywhere they go. This workshop introduces and celebrates many of the different types of functional writing from our daily lives, such as letters and cards, lists and recipes, maps and signs, schedules and invitations, and condolences and thank-you notes.
Test-Prep with Real Books Grades 2–5

Readers need to be able to use context clues to unlock the meanings of unknown words and to recognize clues in text that will direct them to needed information in order to comprehend what they read. This day will be spent looking at lessons and resources that will help readers to figure out word meanings in context and uncover relevant literal information needed to answer questions and support theories and opinions about the texts they are reading.
