Personal Narrative Unit of Study / Test-Prep with Real Books
Keynote Speaker: Angela Maiers

Angela did her graduate and post-graduate work at Drake University in Des Moins, Iowa. She spent part of her 20-year career in education as a classroom teacher and has authored several books, articles, and curriculum support materials. She is currently an independent consultant, conducting seminars across the country in the areas of literacy, learning, and 21st century education. Angela also works with departments of education, school districts, and teachers to help them achieve their goals in literacy education.

Personal Narrative Unit of Study Grades K–1, 2–3 and 4–5

Studying personal narratives and memoirs will inspire your students to become storytellers, to think about the moments, the people, and the places that mean so much to them. It is a genre study that will bring out each students’ unique voice.

Each registered attendee will receive a Complete Personal Narrative/Memoir Unit of Study that you will be able to implement in your classroom. Each Unit includes:
  • 10 touchstone texts
  • 20 or more corresponding mini-lessons that take your students
    through each stage of the writing process, from immersion to
    generating ideas, revision, editing, publishing, and assessment!
  • 10 book labels
  • 1 storage bin
  • 1 binder
  • 1 Teacher’s Guide
Test-Prep Using Real Books Grades 3–5

In this workshop participants will learn how to link essential reading strategies with the essential skills required of students in high-stakes testing situations and to deliver the instruction within a Reading Workshop framework.

Each registered attendee will receive a Whole-Group Instruction Lesson Set that you will be able to implement in your classroom. Each Unit includes:
  • 9 touchstone texts
  • 15 whole-group lessons, each focusing on a particular skill or strategy and connected directly to the 9 touchstone texts
  • 9 book labels
  • 1 storage bin

DAWN WEST
Dawn has been an educator at the elementary level for the past 28 years, during which she has served as a Reading Recovery teacher and trainer. She currently provides researched-based practice guidance for K-5 Language Arts teachers, including modeling lessons, co-teaching, coaching, mentoring teachers new to the Amarillo Independent School District, training teachers in Balanced Literacy, and organizing campus and districtwide staff development. Dawn is also the lead teacher for Summer Academy in
the AISD.
 
 
ILENE COHN
Ilene holds a master’s degree in reading and is a licensed school administration supervisor. She received training at Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University and taught at the elementary level for 10 years using balanced literacy strategies. She has also worked as both a literacy coach and reading coordinator. Ilene is currently a national literacy consultant for public schools, specializing in the areas of reading and writing.
 
 
DARLENE FARRACE-PROTT
Darlene is a cofounder of NJ Teacher 2 Teacher, LLC, which was established in 2003 to provide teachers with high quality professional development. Her vocation as a staff developer includes traveling to many districts presenting workshops in Language Arts and Mathematics. Darlene, who has more than 14 years of classroom experience, is excited to share her experience, ideas, and strategies with other professionals in the field of education.
 
 
NICOLE PEPE
Nicole Pepe is cofounder and lead presenter for NJ Teacher to Teacher, LLC, which provides high-quality professional development for educators throughout the tri-state area. Nicole has more than 7 years teaching experience in grades K-6, with a special interest in balanced literacy. In addition, she is a supervisor of Rutgers teaching interns and presents workshops for various organizations, such as the Center for Effective School Practices (CESP). She earned a bachelor of science in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and graduated with honors from Rutgers University with a master’s in elementary education.
