Keynote Speaker: Dr. Gloria Houston
Gloria is internationally known as an educator and an author of multi-award winning, best selling books for young readers, as well as a writer of textbooks and other teaching materials. With a Bachelor’s Degree from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, and following years of work in public and private schools in grades K-12 in North Carolina, Texas, Louisiana and Florida, she earned a Masters and Ph. D. at the University of South Florida, Tampa. As an author of critically acclaimed novels and picture books for young readers, her books have more than forty awards and listings on awards lists, with one international award. Her most acclaimed books include: The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree (Dial, 1988, Puffin 1996), My Great Aunt Arizona (Harper, 1992, HarperTrophy, 1994), Mountain Valor (Philomel 1997, Paperstar, 2000) and Bright Freedom’s Song: A Story of the Underground Railroad (Harcourt, 2000). |

Using Literature in Writing Workshop Grades K–1 & 2–5
This workshop will focus on how to utilize books during Writing Workshop. Discuss units of study in the K-5 classroom, including genre, author, and writer's craft studies. Discuss criteria for choosing literature and ways to use books across the writing process.

This workshop will focus on how to use authentic literature to model strategies which will support quality test preparation rather than just standard test practice.

| KATHRYN JORDAN-PIERCE |
| Prior to her literacy coach training at Georgia State University, Kathryn spent 14 years as a Reading Recovery teacher and served as a Lead Resource Teacher. She has also led and participated in workshops in the areas of Reading Recovery, Early Literacy, and Literacy Professional Development. Kathryn has been a Literacy Coach for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District in North Carolina for the past 6 years and currently serves as the district's K-2 Literacy Coordinator. |

| ELIZABETH MARTIN-ANGELL |
| A North Carolina native, Elizabeth taught at the elementary level for seven years and has received training in Reading Recovery. She also received her National Board Certification as a Middle Childhood Generalist and a Master's Degree in Reading Curriculum and Instruction from North Carolina State University. For the past two years, Elizabeth has been a Literacy Coach for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District. She also co-teaches a third-grade class, provides staff development, and serves as a teaching coach. |

| ROSEMARY W. CAMPBELL |
| Rosemary has been teaching at the upper elementary levels for the past 31 years. She has been a Reading Recovery Teacher, Middle School Reading Teacher, and for the past eight years she has served as a Literacy Coordinator in the Chapel Hill-/Carrboro City School Districts. Rosemary has conducted numerous workshops throughout North Carolina and has been featured in videos for the state, WGBH broadcasting company in Boston, and Fountas and Pinnell's guide book, Comprehending and Fluency Grades 3-8. |
